In 1996, Joseph Robinson’s dad bought a failing Toyota store in Jackson, Tennessee, with a total stranger he picked up on the drive over. When Toyota told him he would have to sell it, he said, “Give me six months.” He turned the store around and went on to win Toyota’s President’s Award multiple times.
Years later, Joseph left a banking career in Dallas to come home. He was the owner’s son, and he started as a porter at age 30. Today he is the general manager and a dealer principal alongside his father, and he was named to Automotive News’ 40 Under 40.
In this episode:
Why he runs Robinson Toyota like a boutique hotel, built on Unreasonable Hospitality
The simple cone trick he invented as a porter that the store still uses today
Why he hires about one out of every ten people he interviews
Why every customer is a billboard, and why he keeps a small ad budget
His leadership style: don’t just tell people what to do, tell them why
The biggest lesson his dad taught him: treat everyone the same
